Laguna, Palicte umiskor ng panalo

BANGKOK -- Kapwa umiskor ng impresibong panalo sina Roel Laguna at Vincent Palicte noong Lunes ng gabi at tatlong manlalaro ng Team Philippines ang nakapasok sa medal bouts ng 24th King’s Cup International Boxing Championships dito.

Tinalo ni Laguna, isang Navyman na kumakampanya sa featherweight class (57 kg.) ang taga-Laos na si Nilonedone Tancuak, 8-5 habang pinatalsik ni Palicte, mula sa Bago City, ang Thai Team C’s na si Naromit Sittisonar, 11-2 sa kanilang flyweight bout.

Nakarating din si flyweight Juanito Magliquian sa quarterfinals nang maka-kuha ng draw sa first round noong nakaraang Linggo.

Ang panalo ng dalawang Pinoy pugs at ang pagkakapasok ni Magliquian sa Last 8 ang nagligtas sa kampanya ng 7-man RP squad na ipinadala rito ng Pacific Asphalt Concrete Mix, Pacific Heights, Philippine Sports Commission at Philippine Olympic Committee bilang bahagi ng buildup ng RP team para sa nalalapit na SEA Games matapos na mabigo ang unang apat na boksingero ng bansa sa kani-kanilang malalakas na kalaban.

Lumasap sina Alex Pedroso, Esmael Bacongon at Marcial Chavez ng kabiguan sa pamamagitan ng puntusan, habang dumanas naman si Julito Paller ng RSC-O.

"The two wins are not enough but we have to settle for this. This is a no-nonsense tournament and all opponent are equally tough," pahayag ni Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) president Manny Lopez.
