PCG rescues 10 workers who jumped off sinking boat
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued 10 salvage firm workers who jumped into the sea after the tugboat they were repairing sank off the waters of Botolan town in Zambales.
In a statement, PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said the workers were repairing the tugboat SL SUAL I, which was intentionally grounded along the shores of Bucao River in an attempt to stop seawater from seeping into the vessel.
Cayabyab said the salvage firm was towing the tugboat yesterday morning when it listed to its right side, forcing the workers to jump into the sea moments before the boat sank.
She said the workers were on the tugboat to repair a damaged portion of the hull.
“The prevailing strong waves and rough sea conditions may have further worsened the vessel’s list and affected its stability before it capsized and became completely submerged,” Cayabyab said.
She said the workers heard a loud banging sound before the boat sank.
PCG investigators are checking if the tugboat struck a metal debris or a previously sunken vessel.
