Finding comfort in art

I find comfort in art. It is something that keeps me relatively sane during these times and this is exactly what buyers and collectors experienced when they participated at the recent Primero auction of Casa de Memoria, Palacio de Memoria’s auction house.

Religious art, sculptures, old-world furniture, and mementos were displayed and auctioned off, transporting collectors to a period where beautiful art was a depiction of what made life a joy to live.  It was a wonderful and temporary feeling that is so different to what we are going through right now.  I actually visited Palacio and checked out the pieces before the lockdown and thought I’d take my chances with some of them.

Asian-inspired ivory sculptures and oil-based paintings depicting Christian art were a hit among art aficionados who attended the auction house’s first sale for 2021. Part of the proceeds from the virtual event, which was also held live, went to the ABS-CBN Foundation.

Auction participants were treated to 200 vintage items, ranging from antiques to art pieces, as well as heirlooms and curiosities from around the world with a focus on Filipino-European art.

Also included in the auction were top sellers like the 1970s bronze egg sculpture by Chilean artist Alfredo Portales (which went for P350,000) and the 16th-century handwritten letter of King Philip II of Spain to Governor Lazaro Moreno de Leon of Tenerife and La Palma (sold for P340,000).

I set my heart on that letter and the Assumption painting, but it went way above my budget.  I was fine not winning it... I had fun dreaming that I could own that memento or beautiful painting. I shall look forward to their next auction; maybe I’ll get lucky!
