Doña Paz, quest for justice continues
MANILA, Philippines - For those who watched “Asia’s Titanic” about the Doña Paz disaster on National Geographic on Tuesday, August 25, 2009, and Sunday August 30, 2009, you may be wondering what has become of the families who lost loved ones that fateful night in December 1987.
The fight for justice continues. There were almost 4,000 souls lost that night and only 24 survived to tell the tale.
Sulpicio Lines only acknowledges around 1,400 passengers. What about justice for the other 2,600?
The cause of the massive death count was the dangerous cargo of gasoline and kerosene on the oil tanker Vector. The owner of the Vector, and Caltex which leased the Vector have yet to account for that horrific event 22 years ago this December.
The fight continues in courts in the Philippines and in the United States. — VALERIANO DEL ROSARIO, Co-counsel for Doña Paz victims
