ESSU to host language and culture seminar

BORONGAN CITY, Philippines – The Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) in cooperation with Commission on Higher Education, Department of Education, Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF), Pambansang Komisyon Para sa Kultura at Mga Sining and the Filipinas Institute of Translation, Inc. will host a national seminar-workshop, titled, Sulong: Dangal ng Filipino 2014 on October 7-9, 2014 at Bulwagang Eugenio Daza, ESSU, Borongan City.

National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario aka Rio Alma is the guest of honor. He will also deliver a talk on national orthography.

Other distinguished resource speakers include Dr. Edgar C. Samar, professor at the Ateneo de Manila University, Jomar I. Canega and Jose Evie G. Duclay, linguistic specialist and senior language researcher, respectively of KWF.

Dr. Edmundo Campoto, ESSU president will deliver the welcome remarks followed by messages from Borongan Mayor, Ma. Fe Abunda and Vice Governor of Eastern Samar Marcelo Ferdinand A. Picaral. Dr. Jonas Palada, director of Sentro ng Wika at Kultura in ESSU will introduce the guest of honor.

Registration fees is P1,200 inclusive of meals and snacks, training kit and certificate. Expected participants are educators from both private and public elementary, secondary and tertiary schools nationwide. One of the highlights of the activity is the opening of a cultural exhibit showcasing the indigenous and heirloom pieces found in Eastern Samar which will be open for free viewing to the public. Dr. Lorna Capito, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences of ESSU together with professors Angelina Abenis and May Bogtong will likewise spearhead the creation of Samahang Pangwika ng Silangang Samar, in support to the constitutional mandate and to enrich the repertoire of the university’s social science and language department.
