MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III led on Monday the turnover of 66,813 classrooms in Carmona, Cavite, citing the Department of Education(DepEd) for addressing the classroom backlog in the country.
In a ceremony at the Carmona National High School, the president recognized DepEd for also addressing the shortage of teachers and other basic education materials such textbooks and chairs.
Aquino said a lot more has to be done especially since typhoon Yolanda destroyed classrooms in Visayas. DepEd data show that 4,485 classrooms were wrecked in the affected areas, some beyond repair.
Aside from addressing various backlogs, DepEd also has to manage the implementation of the K to 12 curriculum, which aims to boost the quality of high school graduates by preparing them for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment and entrepreneurship, Aquino said.
