Police to secure June 28 EDSA protest

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) will ensure the safety of protesters during the “White Ribbon Movement” rally on June 28 at the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City.
The Metro Manila police and other regional offices will conduct a comprehensive security threat assessment around the area, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said.
“While we respect the public’s right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, the PNP will remain completely apolitical and focused solely on maintaining public order and safety during the scheduled June 28 mobilization,” Nartatez said in a statement yesterday.
Religious and civil society groups led by the Interreligious Leaders Council for National Transformation have called for a nationwide protest to push electoral reforms, stronger accountability in government and action against corruption and political dynasties.
The PNP ordered all operational units to enforce a maximum tolerance policy for rallyists.
