EDITORIAL - What was Trump expecting?
The winner for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, arguably the most prestigious award anyone can win in his or her lifetime, has been announced. This year it goes to Navi Pillay.
Pillay, now 85, served as the United Nations high commissioner for Human Rights and chaired a U.N. commission investigating the conflict in Gaza. Decades earlier she also helped defend Nelson Mandela during his imprisonment in South Africa.
Messages of congratulations from different people of influence all over the world have started to come in for Pillay.
However, not everyone feels she deserves it. In fact, a certain someone feels that the prize should have gone to him instead.
Yes, we are referring to U.S. President Donald Trump.
“The Nobel Prize was given out today to a liberal person who works at the United Nations who nobody has heard of...the United States of America, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize...This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway,” Trump said in a speech after learning that the award had been given.
No, we don’t feel that Trump deserves this award.
Yes, it is true that he has taken steps to put an end to the war in Gaza and the war in Ukraine. And on any other year he could, in theory, be a contender for the prize, but this year isn’t that year because of what he did, and that is start a war against Iran.
What was Trump expecting? You do not start a war no one wants, no one needs, and no one benefits from and expect to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Of course he rails against the Norwegian government, which does not have anything to do with the selection process. Of course he rails against Pillay. But none of that will change the fact that he did not get something that he did not deserve.
This war he started has already rippled across the globe in ways many experts did not even see in the form of higher fuel prices, people losing their jobs, and regional instability. And the bad news is it is not ending anytime soon.
