Standing firm in service
Leadership is often tested not during times of comfort, but during moments of crisis and uncertainty. Since her election in 2025 as Cebu’s second woman governor, Governor Pam Baricuatro has faced both high expectations and intense public scrutiny. Yet despite the criticisms and political attacks directed at her administration, she has continued to focus on what many believe should be the true purpose of public office: serving the people.
The people of Cebu elected Governor Baricuatro with the hope of seeing a new direction in provincial governance. Her victory reflected a growing desire among many Cebuanos for change and for leadership that prioritizes public welfare over political interests. Since assuming office, she has been visible during difficult moments, particularly when communities were affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons. In times when immediate government action was needed, her administration responded to assist affected families and communities.
Critics remain a natural part of any democratic society, and public officials should always be open to accountability. However, it is important to distinguish between constructive criticism and politically-motivated attacks. In recent months, various claims and narratives have circulated regarding Governor Baricuatro’s political positions and alleged affiliations. While such discussions may generate attention, they should not distract from the more pressing concerns facing Cebu Province.
Among these concerns are healthcare services, infrastructure development, disaster preparedness, and economic opportunities for local communities. These are the issues that directly affect the daily lives of ordinary Cebuanos and deserve the full attention of provincial leaders. Public service should not be measured by political color but by the ability to address the needs of the people.
Many supporters argue that Governor Baricuatro’s success was not solely the result of support from national political figures but rather a reflection of the public’s desire for reform and a fresh approach to governance. Whether one agrees with her policies or not, her administration should ultimately be judged by its actions, accomplishments, and commitment to serving the province.
As citizens, we also carry a responsibility. In an age where misinformation spreads rapidly through social media, we must learn to verify information before accepting it as truth. Fact-checking, critical thinking, and responsible discussion are essential to maintaining a healthy democratic society.
Governor Pam Baricuatro’s leadership will continue to be debated, as is the case with any public official. However, beyond the politics and the noise of public discourse, what matters most is whether the government remains committed to improving the lives of the people it was elected to serve.
At the end of the day, leadership is not about pleasing everyone. It is about standing firm in service, making difficult decisions when necessary, and keeping the welfare of the people at the center of governance.
