Storming the gates of heaven

COMMONSENSE - Marichu A. Villanueva - The Philippine Star

Immediately after he was installed last May 11 as new Senate President, former Senate minority leader Alan Peter Cayetano invoked a biblical passage from the prophet Jeremiah in his acceptance remarks. By doing so, he justified the chase incident involving Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa who delivered the 13th swing vote in the ouster of then sitting Senate president Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.

The infamous Senate mayhem took place two days later in the botched attempt to serve Sen. Bato the warrant of arrest against him. But Sen. Bato surreptitiously left a few hours after the exchange of gunfire Wednesday night, even while under the Senate’s “protective custody.”

“Parang walang nangyari,” as if nothing happened, Sen. Risa Hontiveros bewailed last week, while Cayetano stonewalled attempts of the new Senate minority bloc to wrest back the leadership. With Sen. Bato “missing in action” again to evade service of arrest warrant, elder sister Sen. Pia Cayetano stood up at the Senate floor and tearfully defended her embattled brother on the “alleged attack” on their institution.

And the rest, as we say, is history, when the Philippine Senate spiraled down to the bottom of the pit.

Regrouping themselves, the now 11-man bloc led by Sotto will show solid numbers to challenge Cayetano’s leadership when they resume session today. In an apparent bid to restore moral ascendancy to head the august body, Cayetano surrounded himself with a “pray over” by fellow Christian religious leaders.

The Senate minority bloc though took turns pounding the gates of heaven, too. The battle for the hearts and minds of the people shifted to the “opening prayers” at the Senate.

On the first day of plenary session a week after the Senate mayhem, Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan implored through prayers:

Amen.”

The next session day, Sotto prayed:

“Heavenly Father, we come before You today with humble hearts, seeking Your presence, wisdom and guidance. In these challenging times for our nation, we ask that You shine Your light upon every heart and every decision made in service to the Filipino people.

“Lord, we pray for integrity to prevail over dishonesty, for humility to overcome pride and for truth to silence deception. May those entrusted with leadership walk in righteousness, accountability and genuine concern for the common good. Grant us the courage to do what is right even when it is difficult, and wisdom to choose what is just over what is convenient.

“Protect our institutions and our nation from the influence of evil, corruption, greed, division and selfish ambition. Guard every mind and heart against temptation and guide all public servants to become instruments of peace, fairness and compassion.

“Lord, bless our nation with leaders who fear You, honor the truth and serve with sincerity. Let justice, integrity and loyalty for country and to the Constitution rise above all personal interests.

May everything we do today be guided by Your wisdom and covered by Your grace.

“All these we ask in Your holy name. Amen.”

And last Wednesday, Sen. Erwin Tulfo addressed his prayers to all senators:

Amen.”
