We can all do this sustainably!
Congratulations to Mayor Nestor Archival and all those who cooperated, joined his 2026 February alternative waste management campaign: no waste segregation/no waste collection and more effective/faster market waste shredding!
Mayor Nestor’s twin policy successfully reduced the city’s daily 600 tons of waste collected by 50 tons translating to about P150,000 savings – since one ton for waste hauling/ disposal costs P3000!
Can you all imagine how much more Cebu City can save if all barangays/all residents will segregate their waste?
Aside from hauling/disposal savings, consider the additional income from recyclables/ compost that stakeholders/the city can earn as well!
Less waste = less land wasted for disposal, less waste transported/disposed in dumpsites/landfills, eliminating another future Binaliw tragedy with its needless injuries/ death/pain!
Practicing daily waste segregation/management will lead to sustainable habits for protecting our lands/resources and restoring God’s earth, God’s creations.
This early, we hope everyone recognizes the precious value of proper waste segregation and management, economically, environmentally, spiritually for all!
For decades, only the costly/environmental-harmful truck-based collection/dumpsite-landfill waste system was practiced.
Finally, under Mayor Nestor, our long-ignored appeal for participatory/inclusive/non-truck based waste management is now being trial-tested/practiced, showing positive/promising benefits for all in Cebu City!
Padayon, thank you, Mayor Nestor and Cebu City!
Sana the whole of Cebu and the Philippines also take this alternative/eco-economically friendlier/God-centered waste segregation/management route with untold benefits for all and our planet!
In his recent FB post, Cebu Archbishop Abet shared his full support for Cebu City’s recent waste management initiatives.
Some excerpts of his inspiring PASTORAL APPEAL on Responsible Garbage Management:“Today, I would like to express my full support for our City Government’s initiatives in addressing the serious problem of garbage management in Cebu.
But I would also like to say something very important, something very simple, and something very true: The real solution to the garbage problem is not in machines. It is in changing habits.
No technology, no equipment, no landfill, no budget will ever be enough if our daily habits remain the same.
Because garbage is not first a city problem. Garbage is a lifestyle problem.
GARBAGE BEGINS AT HOME. Most of the waste we see on the streets did not begin there. It began inside homes.
It began when we did not segregate, when we used plastic without thinking, when we threw something away carelessly, believing it would simply “disappear.”
But nothing truly disappears. It only goes somewhere else—to rivers, seas, dumpsites, and eventually back to us.
THIS IS A MORAL AND SPIRITUAL RESPONSIBILITY.
As Christians, we believe that creation is a gift from God entrusted to us. We are not owners of this earth. We are stewards. To throw garbage irresponsibly is not only bad citizenship. It is poor stewardship. It is forgetting that God entrusted this beautiful island of Cebu to our care.
Caring for the environment is not optional for Christians. It is part of our faith.
The solution is not complicated:
These are small acts, SMALL HABITS, when done by thousands of families every day, have BIG IMPACT, they become powerful – (Segregate waste at home/Reduce single-use plastics/Reuse/Compost biodegradable waste - teach children to be disciplined with trash).
I ask our parishes/schools/religious communities/organizations to lead by example.
Let our churches be models of discipline and responsibility.
A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY.
I humbly ask every Cebuano Catholic: Do not wait for the government to solve this problem for you. Be part of the solution.
Because the cleaner Cebu we desire will not come from machines. It will come from changed hearts/changed habits.
May our love for God be seen in the way we care for His creation. May our faith be seen in the discipline of our daily actions.
And may future generations inherit a Cebu that is cleaner/healthier/more beautiful than the one we have today.”
