Sinulog preparations on track: Route issues flagged ahead
CEBU, Philippines — With the Sinulog festivities approaching, Mayor Nestor Archival has assured Cebuanos that preparations are "so far, so good," despite encountering some challenges that need to be addressed before the processions and grand parade occur.
During a press conference, Archival confirmed that the route has already been finalized; however, inspections have uncovered issues that could impact both the participating contingents and the spectators.
He noted that sidewalks in some places remain occupied by street dwellers, while water ponding continues to be a concern.
Archival who personally led a walk-through pointed out that gutters, which should carry rainwater away, have been blocked by pipes and cement, preventing proper drainage.
“The pipes are not laid below, but in the middle, so water cannot pass through. If heavy rains come, flooding will be severe,” he warned.
The mayor also highlighted that certain sections of the route lack lighting, creating risks, particularly, for senior citizens who might navigate dark and slippery streets.
Pre Sinulog activities began last Saturday already with the Suroy Niño, which brought pilgrim images to parishes in Sudlon, Babag II, Guba, and Pulangbato before returning them to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño yesterday (Dec.28).
The visits will resume on January 3, 2026, with pilgrim images scheduled for hospitals and city jails in Mandaue, Lapu Lapu, and Talisay, including Cebu South Medical Center.
In the days that follow, the pilgrim images will continue their journey to Chong Hua Hospital, UCMed, Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, Perpetual Succour Hospital, Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital, and Velez Hospital.
The “Walk with Jesus” is set on January 8, beginning at four in the morning from Fuente Osmeña to the Basilica, followed by the opening salvo mass, the start of the novena, and the installation of the Hermano and Hermana Mayores 2026.
The following day will mark the official kick off with a launching parade from the Basilica to the Cebu City Sports Center, the opening of a trade fair, and the presentation of the contestants of the Sinulog Festival Queen, Sinulog Idol, dance crew, and then spiced up with the choral grand finals.
On January 10, the festivities will continue with a brass band competition at the CCSC followed by the Sinulog sa Dakbayan, a cultural show at Plaza Independencia, and a battle of the bands.
Other events leading up to the grand parade on January 18 include the Cebu Marathon, Walk with Mary, the Misa de Traslacion, the fluvial procession, and the foot procession.
Road repairs along the route are expected to be done soon, along with the drainage and lighting concerns.
Mayor Archival emphasized that while preparations remain on track, the city must remain vigilant against weather disruptions and ensure safety for all.
“We want the celebration to be joyful, but also safe and dignified,” he said, underscoring the collective effort required to uphold the tradition that has long been the pride and strength of Cebu. --/RAE
