When the people thrive, the nation prospers

READER’S VIEWS - Consul General Zhang Zhen - The Freeman

As China celebrates the 76th National Day, its remarkable progress in poverty reduction and anti-corruption underscores the Communist Party of China (CPC)’s unwavering commitment to people-centered development. These achievements reflect the core ethos of "people first," aligning with the spirit of the Central Eight-Point Regulations to ensure clean governance and equitable growth.

Poverty alleviation: A historic victory

China has eradicated extreme poverty, lifting over 800 million people out of deprivation—a milestone unmatched in global history. This success stems from targeted strategies, such as door-to-door surveys, industrial integration, green development, and digital empowerment. For instance, Yunnan’s Nujiang region transformed its economy through eco-tourism and agriculture, leveraging local resources to benefit communities. Villages received customized solutions such as vocational training in Guizhou, e-commerce hubs in Jiangsu, and relocation support in Xizang. Over one million cadres were assigned to villages to diagnose local needs and implement customized solutions. The CPC’s approach emphasized "leaving no one behind," empowering farmers as decision-makers and beneficiaries of growth.

Anti-corruption: Upholding Integrity and Accountability

The Central Eight-Point Regulations, a cornerstone of China’s anti-corruption efforts, have rigorously combated extravagance, bureaucracy, and misconduct. By enforcing strict disciplines, such as simplifying official activities and banning lavish receptions, the regulations have fostered a culture of integrity. To leverage digital tools for transparent governance, blockchain-powered platforms like "E-Court" streamline land registration and procurement, reducing bribery risks. The CPC’s relentless campaign against corruption targets both "tigers and flies" (high- and low-level officials), ensuring accountability at all levels. The "Sky Net" operation repatriated over 10,000 fugitives from 120 countries. This operation has strengthened public trust and paved the way for equitable resource distribution, directly supporting poverty reduction.

People-Centered Development: the core philosophy

The CPC’s dedication to people’s welfare is the driving force behind these achievements. By prioritizing grassroots needs and promoting participatory governance, China has demonstrated that poverty eradication and clean governance are achievable through strong leadership and collective action. The human-centric approach in poverty alleviation was extended to healthcare reforms that expanded insurance coverage to around 95% of the population, while infrastructure projects like the "4G for All" initiative connected remote communities to digital economies. As China shares these insights with the Global South, it reaffirms its role as a steadfast partner in fostering inclusive progress.

Aligning with the shared goals of global south countries

As a developing nation itself, China actively shares its expertise through platforms such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund, providing technical support and infrastructure projects that address root causes of poverty. For instance, China helps ASEAN nations like Laos and Cambodia replicate farming techniques. Filipino farmers have benefited from China's hybrid rice technology, which yields 30% more than conventional varieties. Through platforms like the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, China has provided technical training and legal frameworks to partner nations, helping them establish transparent governance systems. For instance, in African countries, Chinese experts have assisted in drafting anti-corruption laws and digitalizing public procurement processes to reduce bureaucratic opacity. These efforts align with China's domestic philosophy of "zero tolerance" for corruption.

China's journey reminds us that every child's smile, every farmer's harvest, and every honest government act are bricks building a brighter tomorrow. Unwavering commitment, together with people-centered policies and collective actions, can transform societies and build a community of shared future for mankind.
