Mirroring societal ills

Ligaya Rabago - The Freeman

We are aware of incidents of government funds being misused, both directly and indirectly. There have been reports of power abuse and unethical behavior by politicians, public servants, and contractors. These activities entail the inappropriate use of public funds. These acts have far-reaching effects that impede societal advancement and undermine public trust.

Through stage plays, movies, and artwork, the abuses are preserved in the hearts and thoughts of present and future generations. Themes of power abuse and corruption are frequently explored in films. A number of well-intentioned filmmakers and artists created films that criticized the excesses of that specific government between the early 1970s and the mid-1980s. These artistic creations stimulated public debate and helped expose wrongdoing. They still influence how we think about accountability and motivate the next generation to call for forthrightness.

The abuse of power, corruption, and government overreach are common themes in plays and movies. These stories frequently explore themes of resistance, justice, and the struggle for human rights while highlighting the effects on both individuals and societies. They provide critical commentary on political systems and moral quandaries and can range from historical dramas to fictional thrillers. These pieces frequently act as a kind of social and political criticism, inspiring contemplation about responsibility and governance.

Bonifacio Ilagan's play “Pagsambang Bayan” (Liturgy of the Masses) integrates socio-political issues with a religious ceremony in a manner akin to a Roman Catholic Mass. Peasants, laborers, students, tribal minorities, urban poor, and professionals are among the various societal groups represented by the Mass attendees, and they all share their struggles with the priest. Pat Valera's adaptation of the Lualhati Bautista novel of the same name "Dekada 70" which features music and lyrics by Valera and Matthew Chang, is another captivating musical. The Bartolome family is the focus of the show, which chronicles their lives during a turbulent decade that included major events like the Plaza Miranda bombing, the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus, and the wrongful arrest of political prisoners.

Future generations can use these works as concrete resources to reflect on the past, look back, and draw lessons from it. Corruption-themed films serve as timeless cautionary tales about the perils of the state. They serve as a reminder that we must actively work to eradicate the corrupt culture rather than being passive or depending on others to handle our problems. Audiences can develop a keener awareness and a dedication to accountability by interacting with these stories. Such artistic endeavors encourage attentiveness and involvement in the quest for accountable, transparent governance.

Movies do, after all, portray the current state of society and the ways in which individuals are living their lives. They capture the spirit of the time by telling tales of hope and frustration. As communities overcome obstacles, these cinematic narratives show shared feelings, worries, and goals. Viewers are able to see reflections of themselves and their surroundings, which encourages contemplation and discussion. By doing this, movies serve as a link between the present and potential futures, promoting participation and fortitude.

We must take a moment to reflect on the past and remember our past battles against abuses by the government. It's time to express our annoyances and cultivate optimism for a brighter future. Let's try to shift the narrative and paint a different picture of the future. We can inspire group action and create a more open, accountable government by thinking back on previous difficulties. We can transform frustration into progress by redoubling our efforts and resolving to do better.
