‘The welfare of the people is the highest law’

THOUGHTS TO GUIDE US BY - Elvie Punzalan-Estavillo - The Philippine Star

Our beloved land is reeling from two disturbing issues: VP Sara’s impeachment and the gargantuan P142.7-billion insertions by the Senate.

Filipinos are utterly disgusted, bitterly complaining, especially in the midst of the severe, incessant flooding, demanding to know where have their taxes gone to.  Asking if quest for power and wealth has become insatiable. If our politicians feel guilt, pity, shame that our Motherland lags behind our neighbors… for once upon a time, the Philippines was the “darling,” the “Pearl of the Orient Seas.”

These were triggered by the actions of  the Senate, expected to act forthwith, with resolute commitment to justice and an unwavering dedication in the pursuit of truth, as it helps to develop a healthy, matured citizenry.

Cicero, one of the  most prolific Roman  writers, wrote: “The welfare of the people is the highest law. Laws must be based on morals, reality and truth. They are essential to our being. The rules of right and wrong are inherent in people…NOT created by SOCIETY or COURT JUDGES.”

As such, “the collective body of all citizens should have input into political decision-making, not only by politicians”… like budget allocations.

Dear Lord, pave the way for truth and justice to prevail, and a bright light shine brightly in the dark tunnel of our broken land.

Peace, good health, safety, abundance to us all!
