Cebu scores statement win vs GenSan in MPBL
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu Greats returned to the winning track with a 100-94 upset of the GenSan Warriors in the Manny Pacquiao presents 1xBet-Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) 2025 Season on Saturday night, August 2, at the Calasiao Sports Complex in Pangasinan.
Mark Meneses produced a career-high double-double of 23 points and 16 rebounds as Cebu scored its second win in five games since its massive revamp last month.
Overall, the Greats improved to 6-15.
Jun Manzo also fired 23 points on top of two rebounds and six assists. His crucial five-point swing in the dying seconds of the close contest helped the Greats secure a confidence-boosting victory.
Jan Jamon added 13 points, five rebounds and an assist while Alvin Baetiong chipped in with 11 markers, six rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Greats, who were ahead by only four points, 73-69, after three quarters.
But a solid endgame performance saw the Greats establishing a double-digit advantage, 81-71, midway in the last period.
GenSan crawled to within two points, 81-83, but Manzo dropped five points in a decisive 10-2 rally that gave the Greats a 93-83 breather in the final 1:22 mark.
Up next for Cebu are the Marikina Shoemasters on August 7 at the Pasay City Astrodome.
Kyle Dominic Tolentino posted a game-high 25 points laced with five rebounds, two assists and a steal but to no avail as GenSan fell to 13-8.
