The online gambling epidemic
Perhaps, the deadliest disease of the decade is online gambling addiction. While illegal gambling apps and sites are issues of their own, the main issue to be tackled here does not concern legality. In fact, it is commendable to see that there are many online gambling apps and sites that are licensed by PAGCOR and are well-regulated. One thing, however, remains clear – all these online gambling services may have a more catastrophic effect than COVID 19, HIV, or even lung-cancer combined!
Not even one famous doctor, or maybe a scientist, a politician or personality in the Philippines is fully and explicitly committed in discouraging the proliferation of gambling games, may it be online or physical. In short, no one seems to care at all because it seems that there is no effort of prevention. But strangely enough, there is a Philippine Republic Act mandating the tobacco industry to always describe the harmful effects of tobacco use… which is just right! This is why cigarette packs have that graphic illustration showcasing the effects of tobacco use and exposure. Now, it might be ridiculous to imagine but can we demand that the gambling industry do the same?
Broken relationships, vulnerability to commit crime, financial ruin, and mental health deterioration are just some of the major effects of gambling addiction. These effects, however, are left unspoken. This is not to say that gambling should therefore be abolished, but there must be some sort of regulation in its promotion especially when it comes to its online version.
In Cebu City for example, you’ll notice that majority of the billboards… or illustrations painted in almost all e-buses are advertisements about online gambling. Try going online, and it’s more prevalent. As a result, many are tricked to try and are then trapped by its spellbinding false hopes.
Moreover, the established general rule in all casinos here prohibits individuals who are below 21 years old to play. People below 21 and even minors, however, resort to gambling online because these websites are easily accessible and such is the cause of this major concern. Those who are not of age can just visit any gambling website and register their phone numbers. After receiving a 4-digit or 6-digit code, they can already deposit any amount and start playing.
All things considered, there is literally an online epidemic. Considering that gambling is already a problem in itself, we have a moral obligation not to promote it in any way possible. But if we must, then at least it should be well regulated. Over time, gambling may never kill a person, but it will shut down our nation. For those who have already started gambling, my message to you is to stop. You have a bigger purpose than that.
