Think God!
I’ve written here before that humans have thousands of thoughts each day. We shouldn’t be looking for the exact or average number since we all have different thoughts anyway and each will have different thoughts daily, too. Let’s just say it runs into the tens of thousands. What are those thoughts? Each of us would have a different and unique answer to this, and as many as the number of people on earth.
And if we ask, what are these thoughts, we all know we have distinct kinds for each person, the variety as unique as all of us humans. We’ll have similarities for sure, on which we can agree. But it’s interesting to know how many of us think of God and how often? The atheists would say they’re the exception. Except that when they say they aren’t, they are thinking of God, but only that they don’t believe in one.
But for us who believe in God and who think of him, more frequently on a daily basis, what and how do we think of God? And how often? The variance would be too wide, even for those who do think of God. There are some who think of Him when we have regular prayers, especially when we wake up and before we sleep. Surely when we pray before meals we think of God as it would be strange not to. But let’s not discount the possibility that there may be a few who utters prayers, as a habit, without thinking of God himself.
The Bible is a rich source of information on people who think of God and those who didn’t. And they can be the models that we can adopt in our daily lives nowadays. The people in the Bible are just like us, humans and sinful, with the same strengths and weaknesses that we have. Except for Jesus with his death and resurrection, they’re not superhuman beings we put on a pedestal as unreachable models to follow. But even Jesus himself fully lived a human life, not as God but as man, whom we can follow.
But the best and only way to always think of God is to be with God. Again, when we study biblical characters, we read that those who always think of God are those who are with him. The Bible has a wonderful way of saying it – “walking with Jesus!” We can characterize our daily lives more often by walking, whether it’s just in our homes or outside. When we walk with God, we think of God. And when we think and walk with God, we follow what he says!
The apostle Paul had written it very succinctly in Philippians 4:8. “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” The temptation not too is always there because that’s what the devil and our sinful self, wants. Let’s always think of God. God’s grace is sufficient to overcome the hindrances that prevent us from doing that.
