Philippines and Australia: Innovating across borders

LETTER FROM AUSTRALIA - HK Yu, PSM - The Philippine Star

Dear friends,

The fusion of Australian innovation and Filipino dynamism creates an exciting opportunity to shape the digital economy in the region. With both nations committed to technological progress, including under our Strategic Partnership, now is the time to deepen our collaboration and drive meaningful change.

Australia is at the forefront of practical innovation – we are developing cutting-edge technologies that enhance efficiency while also respecting cultural nuances. Our experience in overcoming challenges related to geography and distance – as the world’s largest island continent – has driven tech solutions that only strengthened Australia’s digital ecosystem.

Take blockchain, for example. Australia was among the first countries in the world to introduce blockchain regulations in order to minimize risks while improving trust in cryptocurrencies. Today, Australia ranks sixth globally for blockchain patent applications and has the third highest cryptocurrency adoption rate among developed nations. Our regulatory framework has become a model for other countries, reflecting Australia’s leadership in shaping secure and scalable blockchain solutions.

The Philippines is at a similar turning point. Over 70 percent of government services are now online, and the private sector is embracing digital transformation at an unprecedented pace. Robust digital infrastructure, advanced cybersecurity and innovative financial technologies will be essential for sustainable growth, which is in turn vital to the country’s ambition to achieve and maintain upper-middle income status.

This is where Australian expertise – combined with Filipino ingenuity – can make a real impact. The Philippines has one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia, and Australian companies are well-positioned to support this transformation with world class technology and experience.

To build on this momentum, I am pleased to announce Australia’s upcoming Technology Innovation Mission to the Philippines from Feb. 26 to 28, 2025. This mission will bring together 23 leading Australian companies specializing in cybersecurity, fintech, artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain to explore opportunities with Philippine partners.

These areas are not just shaping the future – they are defining how businesses, governments and individuals operate in an interconnected world. Cybersecurity ensures digital trust, fintech expands financial inclusion, AI enhances efficiency and blockchain secures transactions. By working together, Australia and the Philippines can build a more resilient and innovative digital economy.

This mission is not just about showcasing Australian technology – it’s about building lasting partnerships. We seek to move beyond traditional vendor relationships, where a company simply sells a product or service. Instead, our partnership focuses on knowledge exchange, capacity building and joint innovation – ensuring long-term benefits for both our countries.

We have already seen the power of such partnerships in action. In fintech, for example – Ezypay, an Australian fintech company, partnered with GCash in 2024 to introduce recurring payments for the first time. This practical measure has enhanced digital payment solutions for businesses across the Philippines.

With the Philippine Government’s vision for digitalization, now is the perfect time to deepen our collaboration. Australia already has over 250 major Australian companies operating in the Philippines, employing 44,000 Filipinos. With this foundation, we can expand our technological cooperation and realize the ambition of Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.

As regional neighbors, Australia recognizes that what happens in the Philippines and Southeast Asia directly impacts our shared prosperity and security. Our Cyber and Critical Technology MOU (signed in February 2024) and the bilateral fintech cooperation MOU (signed in November 2023) provide strong road maps for digital cooperation. This strategic alignment – combined with our geographical proximity and shared regional challenges – make Australia and the Philippines natural partners in developing solutions that work for our region.

Our partnership extends to supporting the Philippines’ digital infrastructure needs. As the economy grows and digitalization becomes the norm, strong communication networks and international bandwidth are increasingly crucial for businesses, government services and individuals alike.

Australia is working hand in hand with the Philippines to evaluate commercial models to effectively deliver a National Broadband Network. One that is accessible, resilient, cost effective and reliable. We are also supporting the development of a regulatory framework for submarine cables, which will help diversify and expand submarine cable networks in the Trans-Pacific and Intra-Asia regions. This will ensure the Philippines has secure and reliable digital connectivity for the future.

The next chapter of digital transformation in our region will be written by those who dare to innovate across borders. As the Philippines advances its digital transformation journey, Australia stands ready as a committed partner in innovation-driven prosperity.
