Trump’s border czar promises mass deportations to begin on ‘day one’
During an interview on CNN, Trump’s incoming border czar, Tom Homan, promised that mass deportation of illegal aliens will start on “day one” of the Trump administration, meaning immediately on Jan. 20, 2025.
According to Homan, “Day one – ICE officers across the country will be out on the streets,” presumably to start rounding up illegal aliens for deportation/removal. Homan emphasized that he is eager to start as soon as possible because there are so many “public safety threats” due to illegal immigration in the US. The “priority” in terms of mass deportations would be public safety threats and national security threats, such as criminals, terrorists, gang members, those with prior removal orders and others who pose a threat to America’s safety and security.
Homan noted that the deportation of criminal aliens decreased by approximate 74 percent under the Biden administration, so he is eager to have those individuals quickly deported, plus there are “over 10 million encounters on the southern border that came across.” Homan added, “So, the public safety threats are plenty, and it’s going to keep us busy.”
The New York Times also reported that the Biden administration’s lax rules on asylum and other immigration policies made it easier for people to enter the US, which was one of the main factors for this immigration surge across the border during the past three years. One of the big concerns is that among the millions of illegal aliens who came across the border, there are approximately 425,431 convicted criminals and 222,141 with pending criminal charges.
When asked about the effects of mass deportations on family separation (when deporting illegal alien family members, like a parent with small US citizen children), Homan responded, “Families can be deported together.”
In my opinion, Homan is not saying he will actually deport US citizen family members along with the illegal aliens. (US citizens cannot be deported.) Instead, what he is saying is that if the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) deports an illegal alien and their US-born children or spouse are traumatized over being separated, then let the children and spouse accompany the deported alien back to their home country. In other words, it would be the US citizen family member’s choice to stay or go.
Homan also compared this family separation to what exists in regular criminal cases, where if a family member is charged with a crime and goes to jail, then they are obviously separated from their other family members. We do that all the time: send convicted criminals to jail, and we don’t let them go free just because they have family members.
The incoming Trump administration is going to be very aggressive on immigration enforcement, as that was one of the main issues they ran on and why people voted for Trump. US voters were tired of the open border, and Trump promised tough action.
If you have immigration issues and are worried about being included in the mass deportations, I would strongly recommend you consult with an attorney who can evaluate your immigration situation and could perhaps find avenues for you to legalize your status, or you could already line up an attorney “just in case” you get a knock on the door.
