Face behind the threat

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Perez - The Freeman

Operatives from the National Bureau of Investigation Cyber Crime Unit quickly arrested the individual behind the bomb threat that disrupted Cebu Technological University Main Campus on October 21. The suspect is a first-year student pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education. A representative from the university noted that she had previously been a Psychology major but decided to change her academic path early in her college journey. Reports indicate that she often appeared aloof among her classmates, and her mental wellness is currently under evaluation. Authorities are now focusing on the fact that the phone number associated with the anonymous account was registered in her name.

Interestingly, the operatives needed only to dial the phone number while she was present. As the cell phone rang, her eyes widened in shock, signaling that she felt trapped. She attempted to justify her actions by claiming that someone had instructed her to make the threat. However, to the arresting officers, it was clear she had been caught red-handed. Her actions have caused unnecessary stress and anxiety among students, faculty members, and other individuals with legitimate business at the university.

The NBI is determined to see the complaint against her progress in court. They do not take bomb jokes or threats lightly. This stance is entirely justified given the significant time and resources wasted due to her reckless actions. Nevertheless, school officials must also investigate the underlying causes of such behavior. In many cases, students face peer pressure and mental health challenges that may push them to act out in extreme ways. There may also be internal issues they are grappling with while navigating their educational environment.

It is disheartening to note that this incident seems to be part of a troubling trend. Following the bomb scare at the University of Cebu last August, it is surprising to see a similar event occur again. The vast influence of social media can indeed jeopardize institutions and provoke panic. Conversely, this situation serves as a wake-up call for individuals with harmful intentions toward others. The anonymity provided by social media should not be misused; it should instead promote healthy discussions without undermining others. I hope that the NBI will also expedite their efforts to protect journalists from online attacks.

Cyberspace is a vast arena where anything can happen, yet it should not dictate the realities of the physical world. Many individuals suffer from anxiety due to cyberbullying, and it would be beneficial if authorities could respond as swiftly to these cases as they did in this instance. This case serves as a cautionary tale for those contemplating using the internet as a weapon: the law can and will pursue you. I feel sympathy for the student involved, but it is crucial to remember that we are all accountable for our actions. Upon reaching legal age, we must take responsibility for what we do, and there is little value in pointing fingers at others.
