Amazing achievement

THAT DOES IT - Korina Sanchez - The Freeman

After going through the hardships, challenges, and intrigues of the past four years, Carlos Yulo, a gymnast, has succeeded not just once but twice. Reminds me of a famous line. Carlos Yulo won two gold medals in Men’s Floor-Artistic Gymnastics and Men’s Vault-Artistic Gymnastics. For his hard work, perseverance, and training for the 2024 Paris Olympics, he made Philippine history. He achieved a feat that will not be forgotten for a long time. An amazing achievement.

Hidylin Diaz won the first gold medal for the Philippines in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Carlos Yulo just tripled that tally. As of this writing, Nesthy Petecio is assured of a bronze medal in boxing. I wish her success in the upcoming matches.

The country is euphoric at what Carlos Yulo has achieved. Many incentives await his return. He will be given a house in Tagaytay, millions in cash, and several awards and recognitions. There is a parade being prepared for him. But I hope they include all the athletes who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics and did everything they could to win. If they are not successful now, there are four years to practice and train for the 2028 Los Angeles, USA Olympics. Case in point is EJ Obiena, who failed to secure a podium finish in Pole Vaulting. He has nothing to apologize for, as for all athletes. The important thing is not to get frustrated and just kept on pushing. Just like what Carlos Yulo did. He was unsuccessful in his race for a medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But he pushed on. According to Carlos, "Your worst enemy is yourself."

Let's not shine a light or attention to other noises, especially personal issues regarding Yulo's life. That has nothing to do with his victory. The things that are being talked about, especially on social media should be left alone. Let the family sort it out themselves. I would focus on his amazing achievement.

Hidylin Diaz and Carlos Yulo have proven that Filipino athletes can achieve Olympic greatness. May it serve as an eye-opener and raise awareness that many more athletes just need support from the government and the private sector. There are many other Olympic sports where Filipinos can excel. I know basketball has strong support. Other sports also deserve a second look. There may be a Hidylin Diaz, Carlos Yulo, and all the Olympic medalists out there just waiting for much-needed support.

Mabuhay, Carlos Yulo! The country is proud of you!
