Fair and fearless

Every community with a vibrant media presence is often seen as a hallmark of a healthy democracy. Experts suggest that a well-functioning media landscape indicates a proper balance between the government, various sectors, and the people themselves. Cebu is fortunate to have such a media environment --a beacon of truth coupled with the freedom of the Press. Our newspaper has had the privilege of witnessing over a century of our island's history, evolving through different eras.

None of us were born before this newspaper's inception, yet many have dedicated their lives to advocating for what is right through the Press. For me, my journey began during my college years, where I advocated for rights through our school publication. By a stroke of luck, I was noticed by the former editor-in-chief of this paper, leading to the creation of this column. Like many newcomers, I initially doubted my own words. Frequently, I found myself at odds with individuals mentioned in this sacred space. I learned that a columnist's role is not to please and praise but to critically examine the issues surrounding public figures.

The newspaper's tagline --fair and fearless-- has always resonated with me. A good journalist must know how to strike a balance in the stories they write, seeking to present all sides of an issue. The challenge of being fearless in the face of new technology and the rise of “cancel culture” cannot be underestimated. It's now easy to receive threats on various platforms, but these challenges should not deter us. Writing is a commitment --a lifelong journey to uncover critical angles on the complex issues we encounter.

The FREEMAN has indeed been a cornerstone of our society. Its role extends beyond merely being a watchdog; it has weathered numerous storms and achieved significant victories. The most significant challenge today is remaining relevant amidst the rise of social media and the financial strains exacerbated by the pandemic. While these issues are real, they are not unique to this newspaper. It is what the community press is going through. Nevertheless, The FREEMAN has managed to revitalize every aspect of its operations, continuing to connect deeply with the Cebuanos.

My hope is that the spirit of being fair and fearless extends beyond the newsroom. It should be carried by every Cebuano whose heart has been touched by the narratives they read. These qualities should be embodied when we stand up for the truth, as we have a duty to the public. Honestly, I never imagined I would last this long in this space. However, with all of you rallying behind us along with your unwavering support, here we are today. We are now a little over a hundred years old and we wish for many more. May you continue to support our community press, as it remains the lifeline of our democracy. We also continue our promise to keep watch and be vigilant, to remain with a sense of fairness without fear.
