From the river  to the sea?

STRAIGHT TO THE POINT - Atty. Ruphil Bañoc - The Freeman

“From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” We often hear this chant in pro-Palestinian rallies around the world, more particularly these days in the face of the Israel-Hamas war. The chant sounds pleasant to the ear because of the rhyme and because it evokes one of the most profound emotions inherent to the human race; the never-ending yearning to be free.

Let me give it straight to you; the chant is nothing more than a propaganda line intended to hide an evil purpose, which is the obliteration of Israel and the Jewish people.

The “river to the sea” referred to in the chant are the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, and in between these two places are two states, namely, Palestine and Israel. To remove Israel from the picture is the freedom meant in the chant. What does that require?

It requires evicting the Jewish people from the Holy Land and granting for the sake of discussion that it will happen, so where on earth should the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and Jesus Christ be placed? Remember that there is only one tiny Jewish state in the world compared to 22 Arab states.

Can those who chant point out where on the map to relocate the Jews? So far, they have not mentioned any place. Such will lead to the worst scenario, which is slaughtering all the Jewish people, children, men, women, young and old. And that’s precisely what the Hamas terrorist organization is hell-bent on accomplishing; after all, “kill all Jews” is written in their charter.

The chant is not a call for peace. It is a call for violence. Sadly, it is mind-boggling that terrorists can get widespread support in some countries, even in so-called civilized ones. The language of terrorists is violence, not peace or civility.

Given the plot to obliterate their country, do you honestly believe that Israelis would stand idly by? The answer is a big NO, and that is not their history. Israelis are brave people who seek peace. They had been to wars. And in these wars, many countries ganged up on them, yet they prevailed in the end. There is no reason they will retreat an inch this time. Israel, before we forget, has the best army in the world.

It can be recalled that in 1948, the United Nations adopted a resolution that created the Palestinian and Israeli states. Israel assented, but just when it had just obtained its sovereignty, Palestine, with the help of other Arab countries, attacked it to no avail. More wars against Israel came after that, but the nation remained unfazed, no matter how surrounded they were --and still are-- by enemies.

So, what’s behind the uncommon bravery of the Jewish people? It’s their deep faith in God. They have been in Israel for thousands of years and claim to be God’s chosen people.

Hence, they believe that God always protects them. Psalms 121: 4 says, “The protector of Israel never dozes or sleeps.” So woe to enemies that will underestimate their strength.

Again, I will express my surprise as to why terrorists, like Hamas, have been able to draw support even from some educated people joining the chant “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” I’m afraid that many don’t actually know the meaning, the evil motive, behind the chant.
