Queen City of the South

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago - Visaya - The Freeman

We all know that Cebu City is known as the Queen of the South. Being so vibrant in terms of arts, culture, tradition, entertainment and commerce. Its religious aspect draws devotion and attention not just Filipinos from other provinces but all over the world. Cebu City ranked 5th richest city in the Philippines according to the latest Commission on Audit report, and Cebu being the country’s richest province. And there has been so much said about Cebu for so long as it maintains this image from the outside looking in. However, the title "queen" is given to beautiful women who have the grace of beauty and the elegance of values.

The two major national beauty pageants held in the last few days have demonstrated that Cebu City does indeed have beautiful women who meet international standards. Miss World Philippines 2021 has produced Tracy Maureen Perez, while Miss Universe Philippines 2021 has Beatrice Luigi Gomez as its titleholder. Their victories demonstrate a strong support system from the city's beauty pageant fans.

Queens are humans who can be affected by intrigues but remain unaffected because they both remain focused on performing their best in various places and much more that they have already the crowns, which they would prove one more time in the larger stage, the world and the universe. A true queen will use the criticisms to motivate her to work harder and prove the critics wrong.

A true queen would seek ways to challenge existing capacity, even if it meant venturing outside of one's comfort zone in order to become better, a better version of oneself.

The image of the beauty queens reflects Cebu City, which continues to soar, spreading its wings as far as it could, pushing its boundaries in order to blossom and demonstrate its might and power to the world.

Cebuanos are widely acknowledged to be intensely regionalistic as a people. They are also a proud people. This simply means that the Cebuanos are very proud of their craft, culture and identity. They value themselves and demonstrate this by "loving their own," which explains their refusal to speak Tagalog. We can still hear stories about some Cebuanos insisting on speaking in their native tongue to almost everyone, except foreigners. When someone from the National Capital Region speaks to them in Tagalog, they prefer to respond in English rather than Tagalog.

Overall, Cebu continues to perform well, and investors are drawn to the city because of its people's professionalism, dynamism and craftsmanship, its vast highly skilled manpower resources that remain resilient in difficult times, its fair weather, relative peace and order situation, and business-friendly environment.

Despite its strategic and economic significance to the country, Cebu City has no shortage of culture, art, tradition, heritage, creative industry, pristine beaches, scenic spots and, of course, food – glorious and exotic foods! With or without the title, Cebu remains a popular tourist and investment destination for both domestic and international visitors. Cebu retains its title as the queen of the south, glowing its radiance throughout the Philippines. Mabuhi ang Sugbuanon!
