Mango float
Tuesday night was the worst. The flood damaged Metro Cebu so much that the following day not only cars that floated from the flood were seen but tons of debris and trash as well. The city government is puzzled as to why it happened. General Maxilom Avenue, previously known as Mango Avenue, became like a mango float literally because objects were floating. What is to blame? Was it the heavy rain that caused the flood or could it be that sewers were clogged up brought about by what man has done? I’m surprised as well and felt sorry for the families that had to evacuate that night.
My boyfriend was panicking as he lived near the creek in Barangay Kamputhaw and he said never in his life had he seen a flood such as that. Now that the waters have subsided and the sun has started to shine again, we ask ourselves if we still want that to happen. We don’t know who should intervene and how it should be administered but I think it all boils down to what we are doing as citizens of this city.
I love Cebu City so much, although I don’t live here literally but my life has been in the city for so long the officials have become most of my friends even my comrades. My education was finished in the city and practically more than half of my life was spent here. I don’t want to Cebu City to be known as the place of desserts such as a pun intended. Cebu City is a diamond in the Visayas Region some say it’s the Queen City of the South. We cannot lose what we are known for because of a flood and many others. It only when officials prioritize what needs to be done. Only then, I guess, will we not see any floating objects although we cannot control the rain but we can do something to lessen the damage.
Soon enough the city will be filled with buildings and less trees compared to what we see now. It will be a different picture, a different Cebu. My dream is only for the next generation to experience a vibrant city that’s livable for them. Someday my sons and daughters will appreciate all that Cebu City has done for this country and how wonderful is it to live in this place.
True enough, the floods may come and go. But what we should ask for from the officials in position is that the floods won’t reach our homes again and no person would drown and die from such occurrences. It is so hard to reach this, but I know soon enough we can get there.
