Time to cancel a Netflix movie

I got a lot of comments regarding the article that I wrote last Tuesday in praise of Department of Environment and Natural Resourses (DENR) Sec. Roy Cimatu on the issue of bringing the Dolomite white sand to Manila Bay. Here is the first comment:

“The problem with you narrow-minded Pdutz fans you do not see the idiocy of spending 150M for stupid sand that could have been realigned to feed the unemployed, used to purchase online educational tools, or to augment hazard pay to frontliners. Columnists like you who think only a Visayan can save our country are pitiful. I bet you even tow the line that Duque has done nothing wrong. Pathetic.” I really didn’t want to reprint this letter, but it was appropriately signed Pathetic. He obviously didn’t read my column asking for DOH Sec. Duque to resign. He insults us Visayans when we read our history that no Philippine president from the time of  Manuel Roxas to Pres. PNoy Aquino cared to clean up Manila Bay except for Visayan Pres. Rodrigo Duterte who at least showed that he cared!

The other comment was a texted comment from Commodore Robert “Bobby” Joseph of the Manila Yacht Club. “Congratulations for your support for DENR Sec. Roy Cimatu. Yesterday, the board members of the Rotary Club of Manila has all approved the pledge of support to DENR Sec. Roy Cimatu for the clean up, sustainable improvement of water quality, beautification, development of Manila Bay. District Governor Odie of 3810 will send a pledge of support from 115 club presidents, sign a MOA with DENR Sec. Cimatu for Save Manila Bay and the tree planting.”

That’s a lot of Rotary Clubs who support this project. To support Bobby Joseph in his acceptance as Commodore of the Manila Yacht Club, I flew to Manila for the first time since my kidney transplant to show that we too support this noteworthy project that Bobby envisioned to Save Manila Bay.

But what uplifts our spirit is the bloggers who can be found on YouTube talking to dozens of people flocking the area where the Dolomite sand would be placed, as these are people who live in Manila who are simply amazed that Sec. Cimatu has put such a plan in place. Of course the netizens against this project are the people who are against the Duterte administration because it scares these Yellowtards that projects like this give a huge thumbs up to Pres. Duterte, while columnists like me are chastised for helping the President.

If at all, I dare say that we should have a constitutional amendment that states that the president and the vice president should be voted together like what they have in America. This is one way that we can not have a vice president praying for the untimely demise of the president so he or she can assume the presidency!

Call it timely that I recently wrote about the plan of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to regulate the content of Netflix! I clarified that MTRCB was created to regulate anything and everything, be it movies or television shows shown or produced within the Philippines. As what I read in the news report, it seems that the MTRCB wants to regulate the content of Netflix and other online streaming services to ensure their compliance with Philippine laws.

If you folks didn’t know, today there is a huge campaign waged against “Cuties,” the film that sexualizes the portrayal of 11-year-old girls. This was a French movie produced by a black director and like it or not, this is pedophilia at its worse! Underage children should never be shown in public like this. According to research company YipitData, this movie has produced a surge in US subscription cancellations over the weekend and attacks from mainstream media has grown all over the world.

Last Saturday, Sept. 12, Netflix’s cancellation rate in the US jumped to nearly eight times higher than the average daily levels recorded in August 2020 – reaching a multi-year high, the data-analytics provider told Variety. With the #CancelNetflix hashtag continuing to trend on social media, it is possible cancellations could continue in the coming days, according to the firm. At this point, I really don’t know if Netflix can survive this cancellation rate. But unless they remove this offensive movie, I too will cancel my Netflix subscription.

Meanwhile, since the officers of the MTRCB board want to regulate the content of Netflix, this issue offers them a chance to do something in order to ensure the Filipino audience that Philippine laws will not be violated. I mean there is no question that this movie is despicable and should never ever be shown!
