EDITORIAL - Don’t let Molly crash the party

Apparently, for some drug users getting high isn’t enough anymore. They want to get high more quickly and even longer. At least this is what police are saying about a new and more potent variety of the party drug “ecstasy.”

Also known by its street slang as “Molly,” this new drug is now reportedly making its rounds in Cebu’s bars. The timing couldn’t be worse, considering the parties and activities that are building up to the Grand Parade this Sunday.

We don’t need another death by overdose to tarnish the image of the Sinulog festivities. One only has to recall the case of Ashley Abad, the girl who died of an overdose during a party ahead of the Sinulog last year. Abad was allegedly pressured by her boyfriend to try the “silver skull” variant of the drug.

As we celebrate the festivities, we all have things to do to make sure Molly doesn’t crash the party.

Policemen should make sure to keep drugs off the street, or in this case, away from the different bars in the city.

Before the parties reach fever pitch, parents must reinforce in their children the dangers of taking drugs. Any drugs for that matter, and not just ecstasy and its variants.

And because the police have their hands full with security matters and their parents can’t keep an eye on their kids all the time, the youth has the most active part in making sure Molly doesn’t come in. Anyone who finds out about someone dealing in this more potent type of ecstasy should make sure the authorities know about it.

Aside from not taking the drug, they should also actively discourage friends from dancing with Molly instead of egging them on to try the experience.

This new variant is supposed to be more powerful than the normal type of ecstasy, therefore that makes it even more dangerous. That alone should be enough argument to make sure Molly doesn’t crash the party.
