Compensation in teaching

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

Most often than not when passion in the teaching profession is being discussed, we don’t want to talk about money. We believe that if passion is present everything will just follow. But when reality strikes, this very passion is compromised by practicality.

In the teaching profession, teacher training institutions perpetuate the belief that more than any other professions in the world, teaching is the noblest profession in the world, and teachers would not be particular of the monetary aspect.

This doesn’t happen only our country, even in the Unites States, for example, teachers are paid inadequately contrasted with other college graduates, a new study details — and that is driving a huge and growing teacher deficiency that is moving toward a tipping point. As a rush of embittered teachers take to the streets in protest around the country, another report by the Economic Policy Institute features a shortage of qualified teachers in schools.

The lack of pay is driving existing teachers out of the profession while additionally failing to draw in new teachers.

Meanwhile, still in the US, a 2018 Department of Education survey showed that a whopping 94% of teachers pay for supplies out of their own pockets — something that they didn’t find surprising, exactly the same with our country’s basic education. They are digging into their own pockets to buy supplies, food, and many others for their students.

However, the reason why teachers stay in the field is because they want to help students. We love seeing our students get excited about new ideas.

In my concluding years as a teacher, education is an important and personally fulfilling job. I also believe that when we look at the entire financial package that we teachers receive, the profession has one of the best pay and benefit packages of any profession. We recognize that the starting pay compared to some other professions is low, but when you look at someone who has 20 or more years of teaching behind them, and then we add in the benefits for healthcare and pensions we receive, teachers are well compensated.

Teaching is a significant profession since we are helping structure the future of our youth. Much the same as some other professions, there will be teachers who love their job and others who are dissatisfied. We accept when we take a gander at the profession in its entirety that teaching is a standout among the most regarded and important jobs an individual can choose to go into.

Something else to be considered is the opportunity that accompanies teaching. We know during the school year that teachers put in numerous hours, much the same as individuals do in other professions. In any case, when you consider the summer vacations for schools in addition to the Christmas break and other holidays, we regard that teaching likewise offers more close-to-home downtime than most professions. Thus, thought of the measure of individual time off ought to be included into the equation for anyone considering teaching as a profession.

There is an incredible regard for educators. Substantially more so that there are teachers who are emphatically persuaded that their teaching job is not just a profession but a calling. We look past the fifteenth and thirtieth days of the month and are most ready to walk the extra mile for the sake of our students.

We are the real “second parents.” And so for the rest of our fellow educators under this classification, they are extremely worthy to be adulated and their salaries must be raised.
