Ricardo “Ric” J. Patalinjug, the Literary Man of Opon
Born in the birthplace of the first Filipino hero, Lapu-Lapu, in the city formerly called Opon, Ric was born on December 25, 1945. Educated in the country’s oldest university, the University of San Carlos, with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
He is a fellow at the Silliman Writers Workshop. He won 1st Prize in the Ludabi (Lubas sa Dagang Bisaya) poetry contest in 1969 and 2nd Prize in the Short Story Category that same year.
Nyor Ric is a bilingual writer, a pen fencer for both English and Cebuano. His works are regularly printed in the Philippine Free Press. His work “Violet Hour” earned accolades from well-known writers of the country, among them Franz Arcellana, F. Sionil Jose, and Nick Joaquin.
According to the Golden Jubilee of Bathalad-Sugbo Convention pamphlet, Ric is one of the country’s two leading novelists, the other being lawyer Potenciano “Junne” Canizares. Their works considered as a Bible for their patrons and they are called the writer’s writers.
Nyor Ric is a four-time Palanca awardee on short story. His poem “Lawak Impresyon #3” won the 1st Prize for Poetry during the Ludabi contest in 1967. He paved the way for the new road of poetry.
He won 3rd Prize in the 1970 Graphic short story contest. He worked with the Department of Education and Research, and the Associated Labor Union.
He is a member of the “Street Poets,” a name coined by the Dean of Writers, D.M. Estabaya, of the group of young writers who used to hang out at the sidewalk fronting Hope Pharmacy along Leon Kilat and Colon Streets, Cebu City. His fellow poets were, Dr. Mel Allego (the founder of Bathalad), Ernesto Lariosa (Vanguard of Cebuano Literature), Rogelio Pono, Renato Pono, Melchor Yburan, Lamberto Ceballos, Atty. Dionision Gabriel, Rudy Abenoja, Manuel Madrinan, Temistocles Adlawan, Jesus Estano, Jose Tomarong, Atty. Potenciano Canizares, Lorenzo Canoy, Francisco Alforque, Antonio Allego, Goddy Ypon, Urias Almagro, Renato Amper, Pantaleon Auman, Paulo Aquino, and Gremer-Chan Reyes.
Nyor Ric is the author of the book “History of Talisay City” (published in 2014 and is Volume 9 of the Cebu Provincial History Series), his co-author is Rogelio R. Murcia, Jr.
