Baseless tsunami fears

THE EAR - The Freeman

No possibility of tsunami. Following the 6.7-magnitude quake that hit Surigao City, rumors immediately spread that a tsunami would follow. The rumors, however, were baseless because for a tsunami to happen the quake would have to take place on the ocean floor and in a body of water large enough to generate a tsunami. Neither happened in this case.

Learning the hard way. Cebu City residents learned this the hard way after the February 6, 2012 quake which was followed by rumors that a tsunami would quickly follow. Instead of water, it was panicked residents that flooded the streets in an effort to reach higher ground, all for nothing.
