Threats and prayers

North Korea caught the world off-guard when it announced the so-called successful launch of the nation's first hydrogen bomb. Subsequent investigations have consistently raised doubts about the veracity of this hydrogen bomb claim. Many questions have also been raised about this news, particularly, why North Korea made this announcement at the start of the year and why North Korea's closest ally, was also not informed earlier about the hydrogen bomb and its launch.

While the world can breathe a sigh of relief , for now, that this bomb launch claim may be without basis, still, the announcement raised once again the specter of yet another source of possible threat for world peace.

How fragile the world has continued, with both natural and human-made threats escalating. Could the old folks' tale be true that it is a bad omen to see, up in the sky , a star very close to the Moon? Our Nanay Baning used to repeat this to me: beware of a possible global crisis – she mentioned a possible world war – as the star draws closer to the moon up in the sky. We fervently pray that world peace continues and no war at all through the years.

The stock market collapse in China that spilled over to other markets internationally is another new drama to closely observe. How will the economies, especially of the poorer countries, respond to this new development? Of concern, how will this latest news impact the vulnerable groups throughout the world and in our country?

Again, so much to pray for – world peace, sufficiency for all, more concerns.

France remembers the anniversary of the attack on press freedom by terrorists. As the world is shown the hunger and pain of those affected by the war in Syria, more and more, the urgency to respond quickly to help the afflicted and to pray for peace and stability becomes more evident.

Back home, the May election campaign has intensified for all candidates. How to weed out the sincere and honest public servants from the fake and abusive should be included in our people's fervent prayer to the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, the Santo Niño and during the International Eucharistic Congress in Cebu.

Threats will continue to sow fear in everyone's hearts everywhere. We are reminded, however, to stay calm and not to fear. God in control always – in the past, today and tomorrow! Let us proceed in full faith and courage! No fear! No to fear, yes to God always!
