Prayerful discernment

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero Ballescas - The Freeman

There are still several days left before all the candidates for next year's elections will be finally confirmed. As early as now, however, we can already start to scrutinize all those who have announced their candidacy and may our standards for selecting our next leaders include integrity, honesty, track record of genuine public service, and strong faith in God.

How many of those who have announced their candidacy were goaded by these standards? How many took time to discern whether they had God's approval for their candidacy or not? How many of them also took time to examine their own selves honestly to check if they had truly served our people as honestly, as wholeheartedly as they possibly could?

Leni Robredo stands out as an exemplary model. Unlike many candidates who jumped at the first opportunity to run for higher elective position, Leni Robredo was a very reluctant candidate.

Humbly, she said there were others more qualified than her to be a candidate for Vice President. Understandably, on a very personal level, she hesitated because she had children who needed her now that their father had joined the Lord. She also felt concerned about her own constituents back in her province. If she had her way, her answer would have been a ready NO.

She asked for time, time to talk to her husband, time to ask for her husband's advice for her. She asked for time to pray, to discern, to be with the Lord, to pray to the Lord, to know His will. She asked for prayers from all. Many joined her pray for discernment.

Then, finally, she bowed to God's clear message for her. In her very brief but meaningful acceptance speech, she said she could not say no to God's go signal for her to accept the offer to be a candidate, most especially, to continue serving our people, God's people not only in her province, but this time throughout the country.

In her own words, "ibibigay ko po ang aking sarili nang buong-buo sa ating mga kababayan, lalong lalo na sa inyong naka-tsinelas, na nasa labas, nasa ibaba at nasa laylayan ng lipunan."

Several voluntary groups have thrown in their support for Leni Robredo as vice president. You must have read the following call in FB: "mag volunteer na tayo para sa tumulong sa kanya, pumunta lamang sa www.lenirobredo.com ."

Now, there are 3 teams vying for the top national posts.

Do please take your time in carefully knowing all the candidates and we pray that all of our people will be guided to discern and vote for genuine prayerful public servants with clear, honest performance record.

I wonder if I am the only one asking why some candidates announced their bid for the Vice Presidency just recently. What do they have to offer our people? What public service performance can they show our people? Why should our people choose them over other candidates? Why are they rushing now to announce their candidacy? What is the real motives and intentions for their candidacy?

Mahiya naman sana ang di qualified. Kung magaling sa boxing pero 4 days lang ang attendance sa Congress, dapat bang kumandidato?

For sure, these types of so-called leaders will reply back that their service is outside, not inside Congress. Sige nga, can you please show us what type of public service these types of absentee leaders have rendered? Can they also please include a clear accounting of how they used public funds for public service?

Sana, all those who will run for whatever electoral posts will go through a period of genuine self
