Rocking the boat while a storm is raging
Today - the astute political strategists suggest - is the perfect timing for the enemies of the administration to hit the President. But such an act of opportunism may put the country in grave and imminent danger of disintegration. The man in the Palace is "wounded" politically, and his credibility is under a very dark cloud of doubt.
Many keen political analysts believe the 2015 first quarter storm has shaken the core of Pres. Aquino's moral capacity to govern. The Mamasapano proved to be some sort of a Waterloo, or at least, the President was wounded in his Achilles heel. All those "slings and arrows" notwithstanding, we do not think so.
There are opportunists from all directions. Even Vice President Jejomar Binay appeared much relieved that the pressures have, for the last many weeks, been shifted from Makati to Mamasapano. And he was also taking advantage of the situation. He joined that group which was proposing a presidential resignation. Binay, if he has delicadeza, should not be doing that. He is after all a member of the Cabinet, overseeing two major administration programs, housing and labor migration. If Nancy Binay does it in the Senate, let her. If Abigail Binay does the same in the House, allow her. But Jojo Binay may not have the moral authority. Even if Mayor Junjun has been suspended, as a lawyer, VP Binay's battle arena should be the courts.
Rocking the boat, in the midst of a perfect storm is the lowest form of treachery being used by both the extreme right and the extreme left, instigated in part by disgruntled political opponents, and some uncles who have axes to grind. What PNoy is experiencing these days is not unlike the murder (in the political sense) of Julius Caesar, by many of his allies, including his close friend, Brutus, right in the hallways of the Roman Senate. Those who want to "finish" the President's political career are crying for blood. They are being pushed by various motives and ambitions. So, let those who have no sin among them cast the first stone.
The extreme right, led by some partisan bishops, and fueled by a group of disappointed businessmen, have asked for the resignation of the President. The left could not be far behind. The alliance of progressive sectors in the academe, the labor front, the ranks of peasants and landless farmers, the homeless, jobless urban poor, and the usual suspects as perpetual demonstrators and rally enthusiasts, who have embraced a lifetime career of activism, in coordination with the so-called Makabayan bloc in Congress, are all making noises and motions, rocking the inner core of the nation. Well, the left have demanded for the resignations of all previous and perhaps all future Presidents. That is their perennial slogan.
And, to top it all, Peping Cojuangco, the much beloved younger brother of the late President Cory Aquino, with his famous celebrity-wife, Tingting, led a ragtag demonstration a couple of weeks back, joined in by some unidentified supposed members of unnamed church organizations and some fabulous ladies of high society, matrons, bored and rich-looking, who worried more about the effect of the sun to their complexion, rather than the impact of their concerted action to this beleaguered government and nation. Rocking the boat seems to be the fashion these days. We, too, are critical of the President too but resignation is bad for the nation. If The President shall go, then VP Binay shall take over. That is jumping from the frying pan to the fire.
Well, may I ask those people who are rocking the boat: what positive things have you done for the country? Are you a part of the problem or of the solution? I do not like PNoy. I like Duterte and Miriam more. I used to like Jojo Binay. I have written many columns defending his cause. But I do not want to rock the boat while a storm is raging, especially if you are part of the team. I would rather wait for the 2016 polls. Like Manny Pacquiao, I do not want to demolish every diatribe and attack from Floyd Mayweather. I would rather want to see Mayweather eating the dust of Las Vegas come the second of May. Pacman has a more lucid perspectives than all of these "mga panggulo" (according to Cardinal Tagle) combined. Shame, shame, shame.
