Year of the Poor
The year 2015 has been declared Year of the Poor. Let's be kind to the poor because in Matthew 20:11 it says the poor will always be with us.

I heard it said on tv that obesity is a problem in our country. Lots of people are getting fat, nay, obese. But this is a welcome problem to some people - people in the business of making fat guys shed off extra meat to look shapely.

I also heard it on tv that one in every four Pinoy children is overweight. And yet some health experts say many Pinoy kids are malnourished. Pray tell me, is it possible for a malnourished child to be overweight?

There is a move to totally ban firecrackers in the Phl because of many injuries. That's the only solution we can think of to solve the problem of injuries caused by firecracker? That's like cutting off the head of someone complaining of headache. "Let's find another way to solve the firecracker problem," says Nardo Chua, my Tsinoy friend.

Nardosays his forefathers in Nanking, China, have been exploding firecrackers for centuries but no one has lost a finger. "And look at China now," he says. "The firecracker explosions come with economic explosion."

The reported plan to put up permanent evacuation centers in areas often battered by typhoons is a good plan. Or so I think. I am not privy to the details of this plan. So I can only say at this point that it's a good plan.

Good plan I say considering what we have seen after Samar and Leyte and some places in Cebu got battered by strong typhoons in rapid succession and until now the victims are left with no decent evacuation centers to stay in.

OVERHEARD: A rich Makati resident reportedly bought half a million peso worth of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic products last New Year's eve. Someone commented: "The guy had money to burn." Another comment: "Tunga sa milyon para sunogon lang?" Third comment: "Kanang kantidara makapatahi nana'g daghan panti sa mga batang babaye nga naghubo sa kalye."
