Party's over

THAT DOES IT - Korina Sanchez - The Freeman

Some of these so-called VIP prisoners who were caught living a lavish lifestyle inside the New Bilibid Prison, even better than those of free, law-abiding citizens are now crying for their right to have their visitation rights restored. They also claim that their transfer to the NBI was illegal and in violation of their rights. Really? I didn't know convicted persons of major crimes like drug trafficking had rights. Aren't those rights taken away once convicted of a crime and sent to prison?

Still, bringing these high-profile criminals to the NBI was the right move. The NBP has become their kingdom, where they ruled, and literally lived like kings. They had to be taken away from their obvious comfort zone, breaking the chain of command. Taking them away from the NBP also took away their obvious ability to still run a criminal organization. Segregating them into individual cells also removes their ability to consolidate their power and wealth. I certainly believe that whatever rights they have should only be reinstated once they are transferred to a new prison facility far away from the Metro. They should also be placed in individual cells, and not "kubols" or hotels or whatever else you want to call them. They should not be given any privileges. They have already enjoyed a good and comfortable life in prison for God only knows how long.

I can imagine that the reason they want their visitation rights reinstalled is so they can continue issuing commands to their ilk, and run the "business." Their cellphones and internet have been taken away, so now they have to speak to their henchmen personally. They desperately need to get in touch with their lieutenants, in order to give the proper commands, lest these have already taken over their criminal empires.

In other countries, isolation keeps troublesome prisoners in check. No such system is present in the NBP, which allowed the moneyed to buy their way into a comfortable life. The recent discoveries were just too ridiculous to allow any kind of explanation from prison officials. These are some of the things that have to be studied, considered and implemented should a new prison system be in place in the coming years. For now, these are the measures that have to be taken. These VIPs have been committing crimes even when already serving sentences. They obviously mock and ridicule the justice system of the country. They have to be removed from the NBP, segregated and closely watched.

For them, the party must be over.
