Payback time?

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

Speaking before youngsters attending a youth camp, a priest said: "Always be good because we live only once." Right, Father. But I remember someone say: "Sure, we live only once but if we do it right, once is enough."

It was Gaudete Sunday last Sunday (Dec. 14/14) meaning the Sunday to rejoice. Most, if not all homelies that day were about rejoicing. And in this connection allow me to quote the entire blurb in the article of Rev. Fr. Benjamin Sim, S.J., under his regular Sunday TF column "Guiding Light." Here...

"A non-believer once asked a Christian, 'You said you are a Christian. Then where the devil is your joy?' In a more recent time the question was asked again in a magazine article. '"Why We Feel So Bad when We Have it so Good.' Or, as one Jesuit author puts it: 'Why is the Good News, no longer good and no longer news?"

I have a friend in the newspaper industry who wanted to answer that but he wanted me to stamp my imprimatur to his views. I said some other time. "It's Gaudete Sunday, let's rejoice. He put down his phone, saying: "Tawag ko usab Nyor." I'm still waiting for his "call back."

"It's payback time for godchildren (kinugos) of 20 years ago," says a business executive now a senior citizen, over dinner with fellow seniors. "Don't you agree it's now payback time for those toddlers we sponsored at their baptismal rites?"

It was just a jest. An after-dinner talk just for fun. But two weeks later one of the businessmen got the surprise of his life when his "kinugos" now 22 years old called up from South Korea informing him he was sending him a Daewu car from Seoul.

A civic club was to have a Christmas show last weekend. A doctor-member refused to accept the rule of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. He didn't want to sport the haircut of Kim. He was fined by the club P2,000. "Bahala na," he said. "Basta naka-express ko sa akong kalagot sa maong Nokor lider."

OVERHEARD. Pulse Asia said VP Jojo Binay's trust rating had dropped significantly. Said one observer: "Sa ato pa niminus ang pagsalig sa mga tawo kang Binay." Another comment: "Sa ato pa mas misalig ang mga tawo sa mga senador nga sige'g ataki ni Binay?" Still another comment: "Hagsa man sad lagi si Mar Roxas. Hagsa sa motor buang!"
