Ukay-ukay in Sabah

THE EAR - The Freeman

UKAY-UKAY.  Would you believe that the term "ukay-ukay" referring to commercial used clothing has reached Malaysia? A Cebuano Protestant missionary whose assignment areas are Sabah and Sarawak told relatives in Labangon that used clothings are now sold in Sabah and Sarawak and the locals refer to them as "ukay-ukay."

BISAYA. "Of course this is not surprising," he said. "Kay ang nagsugod sa negosyo nga used clothing didto usa man ka Bisaya ug unsa may ihingan niya sa iyang baligya kon dili ukay-ukay." The missionary also said that rubber slippers like the ones common in Cebu are also called "Ismagol."
