October 5 is celebrated globally as Teachers Day. This is the day the Lord has made for all of us to pay tribute and be thankful especially to the gradeschool teachers.

It's our teachers in gradeschool that we must be thankful for. They taught us how to read and write. Our teachers in college received what my friend Noy Temiong called “already finished products.”

The US government continues to shut down operations. I have been asked a question I could not answer: “Is it possible for us Pinoys to shut down the Senate and the House?”

The MMDA has started a program aimed at making its traffic enforcers presentable in public. They're not only required to dress up spic ‘n’ span but also to smell good. They must brush their teeth before going to work. They must also know how to speak English when dealing with foreigners.

In China, the National Tourism Administration has come up with a guidebook on “Civilized Tourism” for use by Chinese tourists abroad. The book teaches the Chinese good manners or etiquette in public places.

For example, they are advised not to pick their noses or pull out the hair in their noses while in public. They also should refrain from using their fingers to clean their teeth. The tourism administration said that this “uncivilized behavior” has caused damage to the image of China.

It can be recalled that last February a mother from mainland China let her son pee into a softdrink bottle in a crowded Hong Kong restaurant. This incident went viral in social media. This was one of the reasons why the National Tourism Administration in mainland China decided to come up with the guidebook on “civilized tourism.”

OVERHEARD. Some high school students were heard discussing their geography assignment. One student asked: “Ang Bacolod City naa sa Iloilo di ba?” Replied a classmate: “Dili oy. Ang Iloilo maoy naa sa Bacolod City.” Doesn't this indicate a need to improve the teaching of geography subject in our high schools?
