Colina Streets and Sports Complex, Cebu City

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

It is the street formerly named "Flores de Mayo" in Magtalisay, Mabolo District, Cebu City. The street was changed to VITALIANO COLINA since its former name has no significant meaning or sentimental background in point of history, customs and tradition of the people residing in the area.

Vitaliano, was during his lifetime, a distinguished member of the Municipal Council of the then Municipality of Cebu (now Cebu City). He served from 1932 to 1937, and showed and proved his rare and exemplary devotion to his duty and love for his constituents.

Among his accomplishments as public servants are the following:

1.) Establishment of the Pre-War Public Market of Mabolo,

2.) Installation of electric lights in the rural or interior parts of the district,

3.) Establishment of a Health Center,

4.) Enlargement of the Police Precinct in 1935 so as to shelter the health and the Fire Department,

5.) Construction, widening and repair of streets and canals in Mabolo and Banilad and the Increase of the Facilities in Mabolo Elementary School and its playground.

The Cebu City Council on motion of Councilor Luis V. Diores enacted City Ordinance No. 280 on March 7, 1960 renaming Flores de Mayo Street to VITALIANO COLINA STREET. The ordinance was approved on March 10, 1960 by Mayor Carlos J. Cuizon.

An heir and namesake of Vitaliano Colina, followed in his footsteps. He served as Barangay Captain of Brgy. Kasambagan, Cebu City for 19 consecutive years from 1982 to 2001. Like, Vitaliano, his namesake was honored, not by naming a street after him but changing the "Kasambagan Sports Complex" to "Vitaliano M. Colina Sports Complex. This was done on August 8, 2007 by virtue of City Ordinance No. 2127 on motion of then Councilor Edgardo C. Labella (now Vice Mayor and a member of the Colina clan) and Councilor Arsenio C. Pacana.

There is another Colina St. in Cebu City, it is named after RUFO COLINA. The street starts from Juanito Diola St. running northward up to Sotero Cabahug Street parallel to Tres Borces Padres St. in Mabolo District.

The street naming is contained in Ordinance No. 559 enacted on December 23, 1965 on the motion of Councilor Eulogio E. Borres (who later became Mayor of Cebu City). The ordinance named 18 unnamed streets in Gochan Subdivision and Tenazas, District of Mabolo.
