Concepcion G. Briones Street

CEBUpedia Clarence - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

It is the street formerly named as GUERRILLEROS STREET in the Veloso Subdivision, located in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City. Its former name (Guerrilleros Street) was one of the streets officially named in an ordinance enacted by the City Council of Cebu City on January 5, 1950. It was then known as Road Lot No. 14. The street naming was sponsored by Florentino D. Tecson, the Board President of the Council or what is now known today as the Vice Mayor. It was passed during the term of Mayor Miguel Raffinan.

Its new name (Concepcion G. Briones Street) is named after a pioneer of the Cultural & Historical Affairs Commission of the Cebu City Government from 1981 to 1985. The CHAC holds office at the historical Rizal Memorial Building along President Osmeña Boulevard (formerly known as Jones Avenue) which also houses the City Library. Concepcion was the President Emeritus of the Association of Cebu Journalists and Executive Director of the Cebu Newspaper Workers Foundation (CENEWOF). Her legacy was her concern for the poor workers of the print media.

Mrs. Briones, or fondly called “Conching”, was a dedicated writer, she wrote “Life in the Old Parian” and “City of Cebu” and other journalistic works which placed Cebu City's image in the national limelight.

She was also a recipient of a Pope John Paul II gold medal for “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” for her active work and contribution to the Roman Catholic Church.

On October 20, 1995 the Cebu City Council on motion of Councilor Arnulfo R. Ravina the street known as Guerrilleros was renamed “Concepcion G. Briones”. Interestingly, the street named after her is the street where she spent most of her life.  It is contained under Ordinance No. 1591, which was then approved by Mayor Alvin B. Garcia few days after its passage by the City Council.
