Counterstrike

THAT DOES IT - Korina Sanchez - The Freeman

The joint exercises between American and Philippine Armed Forces near Scarborough Shoal did not escape the attention of China, who is now threatening us with a “counterstrike” if we continue to commit what they now call then “seven sins of the Philippines”. These include “illegal occupation” of the Spratly Islands, inviting foreign capital to engage in oil and gas development in the disputed waters and promoting the “internationalization” of the waters, calling on the United States to act as a “patron”, while asking ASEAN to become an accomplice. It also stated that the “The Philippines, knowing that it's weak, believes that 'a crying child will have milk to drink'.” China also added that all attempts by all countries claiming territory in the South China Sea will be futile. If you're not incensed by these statements, then I guess you don't really give a hoot about China's “all is mine” policy.

So what does that make China with all these statements? If we are the crying child, then they must be the greedy bully. They must be the arrogant, rich and powerful villain we see in movies, who eventually get their comeuppance. The leader of the “Axe Gang”? Is this the country one can actually have a fair and diplomatic dialogue with regarding the troubles of the West Philippine Sea? Isn't this just plain greed, backed by a powerful military and economic blackmailing?

This is precisely why we elevated our claims to certain islands to an international arbiter, which China will not have any of. China prefers to unilateral discussions. Of course they do! Discussing while flashing its military might and tacit threats of economic reprisal. That's why we have asked the help of friends who are more than willing to help. They understand the scenario of China owning all of the seas. A claim disputed by almost every country in the region. Is there even a country that supports the claims of China? Of note is the statement that we are promoting “internationalization” of the waters. And why not? Because they own everything and nobody has the right to offer anything? Really now.

One can see why they avoid bringing the issue to an international court. The possibility is strong that all their claims will be refuted, allowing the seas to be owned by those with legitimate and sensible claims, and not one with a blanket ownership of the seas. A baseless claim at that. But there is cause for concern on China's threats. Are these the pronouncements of desperation? As we have friends coming to our aid, is China bringing out its trump card into play? A “counterstrike” on us? And if our friends help, what is China to do then? An all-out-war on the world?

I think China should and must reconsider its position on the disputed waters of the West Philippine Sea. There is no room for bullies in this day and age. There is no wisdom in what China plans, or threatens to do. It must choose its words wisely.
