Maria Alcordo Cabigon Street

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

The street which starts from P. Del Rosario Extension going northward and parallel to Antonio Abad Tormis Street is known as the Maria Alcordo Cabigon Street.

Who was Maria Alcordo Cabigon?  She was popularly known as Manding Karya, one of the most prolific and famous Cebuano writers.

She started her career at the age of 16 and her works were published in local newspapers and magazines such as the "Ang Suga" of Don Vicente Yap Sotto, "La Revolucion" of Don Filemon Yap Sotto, "El Espectador" of Senator Manuel C. Briones, "El Boletin Catolico" of Senator Mariano Jesus Cuenco, "Babaye" of Napoleon A. Dejoras, "The Freeman" of Don Paulino Gullas, "Nasud" of Congressman Pedro Lopez, "Ang Bulawan" of Governor Buenaventura Rodriguez, "Sidlakan" of Juan Singson, "Atong Kabilin" of Jose Maria Cuenco, "Kamya" of Maximo D. Bas, and "Bag-ong Kusog" of Don Vicente Rama.

Among her outstanding works, out of the hundreds of shorts stories and articles published in these magazines                  were  the following:

• Ngano - The Freeman, March 14, 1920

• Kinsa Man Diay Ang May Sala - The Freeman,             1920

• Sala Sa Lain- La Revolucion, 1922

• Nganong May Sakit ang Gugma - The Freeman,                         1920

• Sakit sa Katilingban - Ang Babae, 1930

• Ang Nahitabo Kanako - Nasud, 1934

• Si Arzobispo Reyes - Bulawan, 1935

• Aurora - Bisaya, 1947

• Si Pintong Ug Ang Iyang Tinago-an - Sidlakan,             1951

• Adela - Bisaya, 1953

• Panid ni Manding Karya - Bisaya Publication

She also assisted the resistance movement by secretly sending vital information to the guerillas during World War II.

City Ordinance No. 991, approved on February 6, 1978 on motion of Councilor Emilio E. Alcoseba, provided for the naming of a street in honor of Manding Karya for her immense contribution not only to the Cebuanos but also to the Visayan speaking people of Visayas and Mindanao.

She died on March 1962 at the age of 84.
