Don Pablo S. Atillo Street

- The Freeman

The Don Pablo S. Atillo Street is the previously unnamed road traversing the property of the heirs of the late Don Pablo S. Atillo, which was donated to the City of Cebu. It is a short-cut route from the junction of Tres de Abril Street at the Majero Village in Punta Princesa towards Barangay of Mambaling.

Don Pablo left a legacy of achievements not only in the field of agriculture and commerce but also in religion and education, and was also well-known for his philanthropic acts and deeds.

He was born on August 17, 1890, in Punta Princesa, Cebu City, of humble parents (Valentin Codilla Atillo and Anacleta Sanchez). Being an agriculturist, he applied his knowledge effectively to help his neighbors in his vast tracts of land in Cebu City, serving as an example, and gave instructions in helping farmers in Buhisan and Guadalupe in applying scientific methods in farming and poultry raising.

He was elected as the first president of the organization of parents and teachers in Barangay Punta Princesa and was instrumental in the expansion of the Punta Princesa Elementary School from a rented private house to its present school building on an adequate school ground.

He donated a lot to the government, which was used as a public road in Barrio Napo (now Sapangdaku) and also provided jobs to many jobless persons.

He was also a Member of the Municipal Board of Cebu during the incumbency of the late Fructouso Ramos (a street is named in his honor, F. Ramos St.), then the alcalde (mayor) and was instrumental in many worthwhile projects for his district.

A ranking member of the Knights of Columbus, he received awards from the Church; served as Hermano Mayor at the Cebu Cathedral sometime before the last war, as well as Hermano Mayor during the fiesta in San Nicolas, Cebu City in 1955; donated parcels of land to the Church, the foremost of which is the site of the shrine in Punta Princesa of Our Lady of Lourdes.

The Cebu City Council through Ordinance No. 1155 approved on October 25, 1985 the naming of the street in honor of Pablo Atillo.
