Cebuano wants ukay-ukay, habal-habal copyrighted

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

It's June. Some people call it the month of weddings. So the song we often hear in church this month is: “Here comes the blind.”

If love is blind according to Shakespeare, marriage restores the lost sight according to Noy Temiong.

I read an article entitled! “My Habal-Habal Experience in Sagada.” It was written by a Missionary Nun. I prefer not to explain how habal-habal came to be used as the name for motorcycle-for-hire.”

Habal-habal like ukay-ukay originated in Cebu. They were “invented” by Cebuano wordsmiths. They're not lingua franca of sorts in Phl. An enterprising friend of mine asked me one day: “Puwede ba kaha noh lukatan ko og copyright kining duha ka words?”

The first ever preseason NBA game to be played in the Philippines is scheduled Oct. 10/13 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila. This ticket prices range from P500 to P35,000. The P500 ticket is the ceiling price because the seats are near the ceiling. This I learned from our star sportswriter Gabby G. Malagar.

Gabby says the selling of the NBA tickets will start on July 16. He describes the ticket prices as “makalipong.” But Gabby advises the NBA fanatics: “Kadtong mga ang-angan sa budget pagtigum na lang daan.”

It says here that the Philippine and Taiwanese probers disagree on the site of the fatal shooting of the Taiwanese fisherman. How could they agree? Each one has the intention to disagree.

Pope Francis's reply to the invitation of Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma to come to Cebu for the International Eucharistic Congress in 2016 was: “Pray that I am still alive by then and I will be in good health.” In other words, the answer was “Yes, but...”

My dear mother used to tell me whenever I told her about my plans: “Man proposes God disposes.” The good Pope had probably this Biblical pickup line in mind when he expressed the desire to come to Cebu.

OVERHEARD. Some taxi drivers were heard discussing the anti-drunk driving law recently signed by PNoy. Said one: “Di ba dugay na man nang gidili ang drunk driving?” Reply: “Bitaw, Pre. Ang gikinahanglan nato ron mao ang balaud kontra sa mga hubog nga pasahero sa taxi ug jeepney,” Another reply: “Tinuod. Lakaw adtoa si PNoy basin wa masayod nga mas daghan hubog nga pasahero kay sa drayber.”
