Manny’s chance to rise again

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

The Internet and cellular phones have not killed the old-fashioned Valentine’s card, which continues to carry Cupid’s love messages.

***

This according to Nemesio Cardenas of Sta. Cruz, Manila, a shut-in who makes a living making Valentine’s cards and other greeting cards right inside his room.

***

This Valentine’s Day, Nemesio has V-Card orders beyond his capacity to make. “Lovers or people in love prefer Nemesio’s hand-crafted cards because they are personalized,” said my source.

***

Nemesio, 35, takes pride in saying that a good number of lovers or sweethearts ended up in the altar with the help of his Valentine’s cards, some of whose love notes he authored.

You’ve heard of chop-chop cars and chop-chop motorcycles. Pretty soon you’ll be hearing of the first-ever chop-chop battleship from the sea of Palawan.

The Philippine economy has stabilized. Or so some economic experts say. There are now calls for OFWs to come. I heard my friend Noy Temiong shouting: “Ayaw tawon! Stay put.”

***

If the OFWs come home, won’t the economic balloon start deflating again? For isn’t it a fact that the OFWs’ dollar remittances are the main driver of our economic boom?

***

I heard someone say on TV that more people are dying from accidents than from natural killers like typhoon and earthquakes. No statistics were cited but I read in the papers accidents happening almost daily in many parts of the country.

***

I have come across statistics that show most accidents happen in the home, which is why there is a saying that goes: “Home is where the hurt is.”

***

Some of the freak accidents I have come across in the papers are so freak they prick my funny bone. Examples: someone drowned in an overflowing septic tank and another someone drowned in a water-filled bathtub while making love with his girl.

***

Another example: A child died after swallowing a peso coin and a man fell from the rooftop of his house and hit a spading fork on the ground. There was also this woman who slipped after stepping on a human waste and hit her head on the pavement.

OVERHEARD. Some boxing fans were heard talking about Manny Pacquiao’s next move. FAN No. 1 said: “Reports have it that Manny will fight Mayweather this September. FAN No. 2: “Kon mahinayon, si Mayweather maoy himoon ni Pacman nga hagdanan pagbalik sa ibabaw.” FAN No. 3: “Bitaw paninguhaon gyud ni Manny nga pildihon si Mayweather, chance siya nga kaka-rise again.”
