Beware of sweet gifts wrapped in plastic

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

I agree with Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago when she said something to this effect: “Be wary about anything sweet offered to you because it could be wrapped in plastic.”

***

Until I heard Senator Miriam say the above I’ve been a sucker for sweat praises never realizing they could be wrapped in plastic.

There’s a controversy over the Cebuano song “Usahay” which many thought originated in Cebu but in Davao diay.

***

Marina Dario, an amateur Visayan singer of my acquaintance, says she’s not minding the controversy. Asked if she sings the song, Marina replied: “Usahay.”

An old friend (meaning a long-time friend, not old in age) who’s now making good abroad, asked me on the phone: “What do you want for Christmas, Nitz?” I said: “Good health.” He sent me a book titled: “Laughter — the Key To Good Health.”

An article I just read had this title: “Singapore, The Most Modern City in Asean Region.” No question about its modernity now. But did you know that when we started enjoying television in the early 50s, Singaporeans were still dreaming of having TV?

Who says Pinoys — the average one — have nothing left for saving after receiving their salaries? I ask because I read somewhere that the Sentral Bank ng Pilipinas has said that bank deposits rose in 2012 as “more and more people (Pinoys) are depositing their money in banks.

It says here that Filipinos are the most emotional people in the world. If you have members of the family who watch telenovelas regularly, you’ll doubtless agree with the survey. You must have observed them weeping, getting mad, laughing, etc. These emotional reactions are, in a way, proof of the correctness of the survey.

***

Remember that survey by Columbia University that said Filipinos are “the happiest people in the world”? The Gallup Poll recently came up with its own survey saying us Pinoys are the “least happy people” in the world. These surveys are as conflicting as black and white.

***

And because of these conflicting surveys my friend Noy Temiong now doubts the accuracy of the surveys giving PNoy a high acceptance rating.

OVERHEARD. There was an argument recently between two neighbors in Labangon over the Christmas spirit and its essence. A lady schoolteacher said: “Dili man ang kuwarta maoy importante panahon sa Pasko.” Her neighbor who’s in the lechon business, replied: “Importante oy. Kon way kuwarta mga tawo karon Pasko, patay negosyo ko’s lechon.
