US polls: Too close to call

Juanito V. Jabat   - The Philippine Star

I heard a schoolteacher-mother berate her talkative gay son: “Your being talkative won’t take you far in life.” And I heard the son talk back: “Mag-TV host diay ko. Si Boy Abunda lagi nadatu man.”

***

“You’re unlike your father. Hilumon,” Mom continued to scold the son. And the son also continued to talk back: “Wa may damgo si Papa mag-TV host.”

***

So much about this Mom-and-son argument. Let me give space to Mary Jane Tee, a basketball fan from Salinas Drive. She says: “Many PBA players don’t comb their hair. Do they think they look good?”

The New York Times is openly batting for Barack  Obama. Most US papers, in keeping with American press tradition, tell the world on whom they’re betting their shirts on in any presidential poll. And no one stands up and shouts: “One sided! Biased!”

***

Let a Phl newspaper do that — that is, openly bat for a candidate — and the paper can expect getting called names and accused of envelopmental journalism.

***

Oh, yes. Tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 6, is presidential election in the US. Barack  Obama and Mitt Romney are running neck and neck. So it’s too close to call at this point. It’s none of my business, but I hope my candidate makes it.

***

I have six relatives who are qualified voters in the US. I know for whom they’re voting but I don’t have their permission to reveal their common candidate.

That was a very thrilling and exciting PBA game between Alaska and Talk ‘N’ Text with Alaska prevailing by the skin of their teeth. When my wife — Consuelo del Mar — was still around she never failed to cheer for Alaska. Even on her deathbed, she would ask: “Unsay resulta sa duwa sa Alaska?” She must be happy up there after Alaska’s win last Nov. 2, All Souls’ Day.

OVERHEARD. Two college classmates watching TV in a friend’s house were amused to see Americans wading in knee-deep floodwater in New York. One of them said: “Nakasuway sad sila og baha sah?” Reply: “Bitaw. Pero taga tuhod ra. Didto’s Manila lapaw sa ulo ang tubig-baha.” Answer: “Pero way leptospirosis didto, limpyo man ilang baha.”
