Erring cops

- LETTERS To THE EDITOR -

Dear Editor,

Eight Cebu City Police Office operatives were found positive of illegal drugs in a random testing done recently. It is probably not a shocker anymore.

As it happens in this country, those who preach are those who don't do.

Politicians preach of honesty yet they are the very ones to engage in corruption.

Business leaders preach of success from humble beginnings yet they are the first to resort in illegal means.

Priests preach of banality yet they are the ones getting accused of rape.

And nuns preach of purity but are the ones hard on forgiveness.

When Cebu topped the Central Visayas list boasting of cities with most crimes, it gave us an insight on how pitiful our defense is. This is so even if the CCPO head claimed this year's statistics were lower compared to last year.

While it is true that rants against the police are overrated and that there are, in fact, good eggs among the bad ones, they rarely give us reason to praise them except when they ... actually they never give us any reason.

Mayor Michael Rama's leadership style is big on rewards for the performers. But when these same people are slacking, Mayor Rama should also revoke certain privileges and make them work for it re-installment.

A good leader must know when to give and when to take.

Besides, how can you implement the law when you violate it yourself. To think they are just the police from CCPO.

Now, how about the police assigned to the other agencies?

They should be tested as well, even those with the Philippines Drug Enforcement Agency should not be spared.

We must first weed out our backyard before we proceed with our neighbor's.

Sincerely,

Maria Clara E. Ricamora
