UN must respect our Catholic beliefs

SHOOTING STRAIGHT - Bobit S. Avila -

For our special presentation on Straight from the Sky tonight, we bring you a topic that land developers, political leaders and concerned citizens ought to learn… it’s about the Relationship between a Master Plan and Zoning. I was in the forefront in the battle of the fly-overs and I still believe in them despite the fact that those who are against it are the so-called “new kids in the block.” But in truth, many of the oppositors are there because of their own selfish and vested interests… where their businesses would be affected by the construction.

I had been a member of the Regional Development Council Region 7 (RDC-7) for 20-years now and was heavily involved in the Central Visayas Regional Projects (CVRP), which later evolved into the Metro Cebu Development Program (MCDP) 1, 11, & 111 for free! During those days, we were involved in the implementation of the Metro Cebu Land Use & Transport System (MCLUTS), which was the Master Plan for Cebu.

Then all of the sudden… these new “kids on the block” appeared out of nowhere and dared insult us that the plans for the flyovers were not part of any master plan because there wasn’t any. Of course, the biggest problem in having a master plan is when our politicians veer or deviate from those plans… something that we often see because of political issues. One of these issues that few people talk about is the relationship between a master plan and zoning. This has go hand-in-hand.

It is for this reason I asked Bing Martinez to beguest of our show so that he would show us the importance of this link between the master plan and zoning because while he is a blue-blooded Sugbuanon, he worked in the US for a long time and has a different perspective from the rest of us. So watch this highly-informative show on SkyCable’s channel 15 at 8:00 p.m. and its replay on MyTV channel 28 at 9:00 p.m. We are also shown in Cagayan de Oro.

My readers who follow our columns through the more than two decades that we have been writing columns know me well enough that I have very little respect for the United Nations (UN) and its allied agencies, like the World Health Organization (WHO) for the simple reason that they have not really helped in alleviating global poverty.

The UN has not stopped warlords from taking over countries, especially in the African continent, where people are murdered for any reason. Somalia is such a country, where the hijacking of foreign vessels going into the Straits of Hormuz continues up to this day. If the UN only put a peacekeeping force in Somalia, then police forces can stop those hijackers before they can even launch their speedboats.

Last week, the nation was gripped with fear because of the North Korean rocket launch, where the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) went overdrive, stopping fishermen from fishing in the waters where the debris from the North Korean rocket were expected to fall. Why is North Korea having these modern military weapons, when its people are starving from lack of food? That’s because the UN allows them to do so.

Last April 11, 2012 was the 61st anniversary of the sacking of the American Caesar, Gen. Douglas McArthur by US President Harry Truman because he was playing politics. Gen. McArthur was Commander of the United Nations (UN) Command fighting the North Korean communists. But when Gen. McArthur found out that a million-man Chinese regular army had crossed the Yalu River, what do you think a military tactician would do? He threatened to nuke the Chinese… even nuke Peking (they call it Beijing now) because he knew that the UN would have already won the Korean War if the Chinese did not intervene. It was now the UN vs. China!

I will not forget Gen. McArthur’s retort to his being fired by Pres. Truman… “It’s a dangerous concept that men of the armed forces must owe their allegiance to these temporary occupants of the White House, instead of to the country and the constitution to which they have sworn to defend.”Well, the politicians in the UN won the day, World War III did not happen in 1951 (although the US would have won that war if it had happened) but it was only delayed by a few decades… because World War III could still erupt and North Korea could still be the fuse that triggers this war.

Anyway the reason why I’m bashing the UN today is because of an article that came out of The Philippine Star last Saturday where the UN and WHO and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) declared that the Philippines need to have a law on Reproductive Health (RH) to institutionalize policies and programs of maternal and child health. What the UN wants is to kill innocent, defenseless babies in their mother’s womb, which is diametrically opposed to our Catholic Faith. I dare say that the UN should back off from this issue and respect our Catholic beliefs.
